The special religious event was held in Modi’s parliamentary constituency, with prayers offered for his good health, longevity and prosperity.

Varanasi South MLA Dr Neelkanth Tiwari joined the 76 students in the ritual, which was conducted amid the chanting of Vedic mantras and according to traditional customs. The participants also held photographs of Prime Minister Modi and their MP.

Tiwari said Modi’s birthday was being observed with a spirit of service, spiritual faith and public welfare. He said the 76 students performed the Dugdhabhishek of Maa Ganga and prayed for the prime minister’s good health and long life.

He added that Maa Ganga holds a special place in the religious and spiritual traditions of Kashi, and said the ritual reflected the city’s deep-rooted faith and traditions.

He asked which budget would pay for the diyas, wicks and oil, and said department secretaries and collectors should be prepared to provide an account of the expenditure.

According to the account shared by Das, the workers were asked to light a diya, celebrate Modi’s birthday and record videos praising him and government schemes. The message also alleged that “action” was threatened against those who did not comply.

Das criticised the alleged directive and raised questions over the working conditions of Anganwadi workers, citing low pay, heavy workloads, vacancies, lack of social security and healthcare, and poor infrastructure.
